MindTime for Kids

On September 27th, Kimberly Long will begin offering a new program at Sarasota Mindfulness Institute (SMI).  MindTime is a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program designed for 2nd through 5th graders that addresses:

Mindful practices to bring out your super hero senses! Get the attention and focus of a ninja! Worried about a test? Learn how to zap those fears! Fun activities and exercises to train your brain! Learn how your mind really works! ~from MindTimeKids.com

This multi-session series is scheduled for Saturday mornings at 10:30am, offering parents a opportunity to drop their children off, then peruse the Farmer’s Market, while the kids enjoy an hour of fun through mindful exploration.

There will be three 6 week series of MindTime classes between September 2014 and March 2015:

  • Brain Basics = GoZen = Taming anxiety through understanding how the brain works to avoid thought-holes [Sept 27 – Nov  1]
  • Pause & Presence = GoNow = Strategies to press the pause button to reflect and respond vs react [Nov 8 – Dec  20]
  • Character Counts = GoStrengths = Skills to cope with challenges, boost emotional IQ, and strengthen relationships [Jan  10 – Mar 14 (10 wks)]

Kimberly Long attended the Mindful Kids training with Daniel Rechtschaffen at SMI.  She is currently in training through the yearlong Mindful Schools program.

The Sarasota Mindfulness Institute has an ongoing interest in the ways mindfulness can benefit kids. Last year, SMI hosted a Mindful Kids training by Daniel Rechtschaffen, author of The Way of Mindful Education: Cultivating Well-Being in Teachers and Students. He came to SMI via the Omega Institute.  Twenty local adults attended Daniel’s training, then went out to offer the Mindful Kids Program in several Title 1 schools around Sarasota.

In this 3 min. video, from 2010, Daniel speaks to the ways mindfulness education can help kids release stress, understand attention, and increase focus:
